It rose by only 1%a dramatically slimmer increase than last year's 12%, and the slowest rise since Forbes began tracking the numbers. This is great news for the superrich, who, new research shows, have taken to bargainhuntinga habit they once considered unthinkable.
Conventional wisdom once dictated that even in turbulent economic times the richest segment of the population would stay above the fray, allowing makers of super highend products to maintain their sales. But that doesn't hold true today. Few have been immune to the global economic slide, and luxury consumers, who fear both appearing insensitive to the plight of others and for their future earnings, have curbed their spending.
"There's a different mindset for luxury consumers," says Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing, a Stevens, Pa.,[url=http://www.floware.fr]michael kors femmes[/url], market research firm that specializes in luxury goods. "The definition of luxury has stayed the same; it's associated with finer quality, more comfort, more beautiful things. But they don't want to be perceived as uncaring, or unaware of the cultural trends. And many have had their incomes directly affected by the recession."
Marketers of luxury goods have been forced to respond by offering products at a discount. dollars can buy more this year. The British pound, while strong, is weaker against the dollar than it was this time last year. You can pick up a RollsRoyce Phantom in Hong Kong for $377,500, the cheapest price in any city we surveyed. A case of 10 Dominican "Aniversario No. 1" Davidoff cigars is $592 in Hong Kong, 34% cheaper than it is in New York. And you won't find the cigars any cheaper than in Dubai, where they're $360. While in Dubai, pick up a gold Patek Phillipe watchits $14,996 price tag is the lowest in all our cities.
But even as highend buyers get smarter with their reduced wealth, and luxury retailers try to lure them back by chipping away at prices, marketers of designer products are hoping for the return of conspicuous consumption. Danziger says they may be facing a different world then they are used to.
"A lot of marketers and brands want to pretend it's just a business cycle and it all will go away," says Danziger. "But I don't think people will go back to spending those kinds of dollars."
